1:18 Kyosho Ferrari F40 Light Weight
Technically, in the real world, the Ferrari F40 Light Weight does not exist. Yet, Kyosho made it exist in 1:18 scale. My model is in black. I would have preferred it in red but the red F40 Light Weight in 1:18 scale is extremely rare and even if i found one, it would be very expensive.
Kyosho has really done a nice job with the F40 Light Weight. There are many good things about this car. One of them is the well replicated pop-up headlights that are also found on the real life F40. Another very cool feature is that both of the seats inside the cabin and moveable forwards and backwards. Kyosho has also replicated the little details that are present all over the Ferrari. Details such as the Ferrari Bag in the front, the little vents that are present all over the car and the wiring in the front section of the car. I am not sure what exactly these wires do, but looking at real life pictures, i can see that Kyosho has replicated them well. The engine of this model is one that is very well done. It has a very good depth and the owner is able to look through the engine and see all of the detail that is in it. As the engine is so far back it is a bit hard to look at though but with the amount of detail that is present, it makes you want to take a closer look. As you may already have noticed, i like my exhausts on my models to be well done. Also, on this model, the exhausts are really well done. There is a nice series of pipes that are present in the engine bay that then lead off to the exhaust. This has been nicely replicated. On the real F40, to save weight and make the engine cool off easier, the engine cover has slats in it, on the model, these slats are replicated perfectly. The same is said for the windows with a small cut out. Almost all of my models have some sort of working suspension. However, very few of them show the springs in action. This model does and it is very cool. As the F40 is an extremely light weight car, the main tub is made out of carbon fibre. On the model there is some extremely realistic looking carbon fibre imprints that surround the tub. Although the interior is sparse like the real car, whatever is inside, is very well done, the materials are nice to feel and look realistic. The rims and brakes are done nicely. I especially like the little OZ logo on one of the spokes of rims. Finally to wrap up the positives, the front and rear lights are done very nicely. On the front lights there are the little heating lines that are very clearly present.
Now for a major con. The known flaw of Kyosho’s have always been the paint bubbling issue. On my model, the issue of it bubbling is extremely high and ruins the look of the model. It also bring its resale value down. This is a major issue that Kyosho has yet to fully resolve. If the paint was a lot better than it currently is, the model would be very much better.
In conclusion i can say that although the model is very good, the risk of buying one with paint problems might just be too risky.
Final Scores
exterior- 8/10 (not for detail but for paint issues)
interior- 8/10
value- 7/10
little details/ features- 8/10
total- 31/40
